Epidural Steroid Injections

A minimally invasive procedure targeting pain caused by inflammatory spinal conditions using fluoroscopic guidance to deliver corticosteroid into the epidural space, by a caudal or transforaminal approach.Patients experience immediate relief from the anesthetic, with longer-lasting steroid effects developing over two weeks and lasting three to six months.

During the Procedure

In the procedure suite your physician sanitizes and numbs the area with a local anesthetic. Fluoroscopic guidance then confirms needle placement as a corticosteroid and anesthetic mixture is delivered into the epidural space.A caudal injection reaches that space through the sacral hiatus at the lower end of the sacrum. A bandage is placed and you are taken to our recovery suite for observation.

After Your Procedure

Immediate relief from the anesthetic is common. Longer-term pain relief develops over two weeks as the steroid reduces inflammation. Results generally last three to six months.If a sedative is used, arrange a ride home. We recommend avoiding driving and strenuous activity for at least twenty four hours, then resuming normal routines as directed.Call the office if increased pain, fever, swelling, or redness develops around the injection site.
