Spinal Cord Stimulation

About the treatment

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat patients with chronic low back pain, neck pain, and other types of chronic pain that have failed many other more conservative therapies. Spinal cord stimulation works by interrupting pain signals from reaching the brain with electrical pulses. This treatment is most commonly used for chronic low back pain, neck pain/ headaches, chronic regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and nerve pain. The nerve stimulation process begins with a temporary electrode that is inserted into the skin. The process of the SCS begins with a 5-7 day trial period to determine efficacy. The procedure is considered a success if at least 50% pain reduction is noted, the patient will then be recommended for the permanent SCS and referred to a surgeon for placement. This is a minimally invasive procedure that should only leave a small incision. The patient should keep the incision area clean and dry until healed.
